Purifaire Antiviral
System™ and Office Inoculation™ achieve disinfection through the
use of short wave ultraviolet light (UV-C) at 254 nanometers (nm).
This process is called Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation or UVGI.
UVGI was first successfully employed in 1909 to disinfect the municipal
water system in Marseilles, France. Since that time UVGI has been
endorsed by many scientists and organizations but has been commercially
limited by products that did not lend themselves to ease of applications
as well as lack of awareness in the broad marketplace.
Proven Effective:
These recent references exhibit the power of the technology.
“Ultraviolet radiation in the range of 2.250-3.020 Angstroms
(225 to 302 nm) is lethal to microorganisms.” Federal
Emergency Management Association (FEMA) in their publication Reference
Manual to Mitigate Potential Terrorist Attack Against Buildings.
UVGI has proven to result in:
- 20% reduction in worker sickness
- 40% drop in breathing problems
- 60% reduction in mucosal complaints
“Effect of ultraviolet germicidal
lights on workers health and wellbeing: double blind multiple
crossover trial”, The
Lancet, November 29,2003.

Safe:
All Lighting for Human Health™ products are ozone neutral*. Ozone
is an unstable version of oxygen denoted by O3. While ozone is indeed
a proven disinfectant, it can be very unhealthy for you to breathe.
The unstable 3rd atom of oxygen readily attaches itself to anything
with which it can react, including your lungs and body tissue, which
causes oxidation. This is the very thing anti-oxidants such as vitamin
C are trying to prevent. In fact, ozone is toxic, the World Health
Organization has established 60 ppb (parts per billion) as the 8 hour
reference period exposure limit, and in high concentrations ozone
can even cause fatality. Even at low concentrations, sensitive individuals
can experience unpleasant symptoms such as headaches and nausea.
Unfortunately, many electronic products, almost all ionizers, many
UV lights, and even some air purifiers produce ozone. Lighting for
Human Health™ takes care to filter out ultraviolet light below 200nm,
the region where ozone is produced.
* Testing over a 16 hour test period has measured ozone concentrations
lower than that found in the base line (background) levels.
Another safety issue to consider is people can experience
eye or skin irritation if the fixture is not properly installed.
Ultraviolet light in the germicidal range (UV-C) should not be viewed
by unprotected eyes. It can cause conjunctivitis, a painful, although
not permanently damaging, condition of the eye. It may feel as if
someone has thrown sand into your eye. To avoid this, all Lighting
for Human Health™ products are designed with precautions to avoid
any user exposure.
The Purifaire Antiviral System™ for homes is designed to be installed
in your air handling system and has safety switches to not power the
device until it is safely enclosed. DO NOT BYPASS the SAFETY SWITCH!
The, Office Inoculation™ commercial products use parallel plates and
reflectors to collimate the UV into a beam pattern that projects above
average human eyes. Resultantly, when properly mounted, they are designed
to limit any possible exposure to less than 0.2 microwatts per square
centimeter (µW/cm2), the NIOSH R.E.L. (recommended exposure limit)
weighted for 8 hours of continuous exposure. Nevertheless, caution
must be taken to properly mount the devices according to the instructions
enclosed with the product.
